♦ FIRELANDS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Phone (440) 621-4800 Fax (419) 621-4900
Description: In December 1982, a small group of musicians gathered to present a concert in a church in Sandusky. Two decades and hundreds of concerts later, the local ensemble has evolved into the Firelands Symphony Orchestra. We are proud to be continuing the legacy of providing residents of North Central Ohio with the finest caliber classical and pop music.
The group began as The Fine Arts Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Timothy Claubaugh, choir director at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sandusky. Blake Walter served as music director from 1985-1990 with several interim conductors following. In 1992, J. Santos Perez assumed the posts of music director and conductor. At the same time, the organization incorporated as a non-profit and changed its name was to Firelands Symphony Orchestra. This name marked the growth of the orchestra into a full-size symphony and also acknowledged the geographic area it serves. The present music director and conductor, Carl Topilow, joined the organization in 2008 after a year-long music director search. Since 2006, concert attendance and season ticket holders have increased by 400%. Our 2010 holiday concert had the largest number of tickets sold in FSO history. Maestro Topilow and the Firelands Symphony Orchestra continue to thrill audiences with engaging performances and memorable music.

♦ VERMILION NEWS PRINT SHOP MUSEUM
A. to allow the general public an opportunity to observe the manner in which 19th
and 20th letter press printing and newspaper publishing were accomplished by:
(i) providing the public with a knowledge of the equipment used for printing and publishing a weekly newspaper,
(ii) illustrating to the public the tasks requisite to publishing a weekly newspaper, as well as the printing of books, magazines, and posters using letter presses,
(iii) providing the public with an understanding of how news was gathered and disseminated small towns in America during the majority of both the 19th and 20th centuries thus providing all with substantial historical records of social and economic development
This is a nonprofit organization in its infancy. We’re starting from scratch with a building and equipment that served as a print shop and a weekly newspaper from 1905 to 1964.
The building was built in 1904 by Caselton Roscoe of Milan, Ohio for his son and daughter-in-law, Pearl and Bessie Roscoe to house the business. There is an apartment above the shop where the Roscoe’s lived and raised their two daughters. Today a grandson, Al, still lives in the apartment.
The print shop houses two linotypes (c.1915), and 4 letter presses: A Stonemetz 2 revolution newspaper press (c.1919); a Kelly press (c.1917); a Chandler & Price 8″x12″ Gorden Jobber Press (c.1900); and a Heidelberg windmill Press (c.1954). There is book bindary / storage room with a manual paper cutter, electric stapler, and manual hole punch machine.
